Children, women and vulnerable families are at the heart of what we do

Children

We work with children in the Esparanza area of La Liberdad, Peru. Coming from areas of poverty, these children often don't have enough resources to go to school, eat regular meals or have a stable and loving living situation. Through Hilo Rojo’s programs, the children have an opportunity to be educated, loved and well fed.

  • The Hilo Rojo school provides free schooling to children from 2-15 years old. Our inclusive and loving environment allows Hilo Rojo's students to learn not only the importance of education, but of self-worth and commitment to their futures.

  • Many of the children we work with live in situations of extreme poverty. Without even enough food to put on the table, the prospects of paying for schooling are very low. By becoming a Godparent you can join Hilo Rojo in our fight for education by giving a child the unique opportunity of attending school. Thanks to our current Godparents we have helped more than 80 children attend school, but there is still a lot of need to be met. Your help would change a child's future for the better.

  • Our community needs a center for children with special needs. Hilo Rojo, through its infrastructure and specialized personnel, opened a classroom to receive children with special abilities.

These difficulties include: cognitive, communicational, linguistic, intellectual, motor, sensory or in some cases a number of the above. Our program teaches the children to have more autonomy and to feel more integrated in the community.

  • At Hilo Rojo we understand the importance of being multilingual in our globalised world. For this reason we provide free English lessons to children in our community. Run by volunteers, often with English as their first language, our lessons not only allow children to learn the English language, but put them in contact with cultures from around the world.

Women

We know that in order to have a strong community, its women need to be empowered. That’s why Hilo Rojo works closely with the women of the Esparanza region to help improve their mental and physical wellbeing. These women often come from backgrounds of poverty and domestic violence. Through Hilo Rojo’s women programs they are able to build strong bonds, kinship and have a space to heal.

  • Punto Rojo is a female led program that encourages women to become financially independent through the creation and selling of artisinal crafts. It is through Punto Rojo that many of the women in our community are empowered to leave situations of domestic violence and grow as individuals.

Community

By connecting with local community groups we are able to expand our programs and create a stronger tie between what we are doing and the people it is affecting. We work with other educational programs and people from the community to extend our reach and raise awareness of the importance of education in personal and societal development.

  • Our Piña Roja program was put in place with the understanding that to succeed in education children need to be well fed and clothed. Piña Roja sources food that would otherwise go to waste, from local markets, and creates healthy meals for children at the Hilo Rojo school and in suburbs where food is short.
